“Poetry is a kinetic arrangement of static syllables.” - Carl Sandburg
As we enter the last days of 2020, a common phrase that we hear among the Sock Club team is that this year has been “the longest, shortest year ever.” Somehow, we have blinked and arrived near the end of this crazy year, and yet, the life we lived in January seems like a different time entirely. This kind of paradox is a common theme in art and in the world, and seems to be most prominent when we are on the precipice of something truly interesting. In the early 1900s, the Surrealist art movement, and Albert Gleizes in particular, began exploring Kinetic Art, which is a static work of art that has virtual or perceived movement. The creation of this paradox between motion and stillness forced the viewer to consider what it really does mean to move forward, and what it really does mean to be still. We hope your November sock, The Gleizes, allows you to reflect on the stillness and peace that this year has provided, while still pushing you forward. Whatever is next, we will take it on together.
